Knott Berry Farm: From Humble Beginnings to a Thrilling Amusement Park

Knott Berry Farm, located in Buena Park, California, is no ordinary amusement park. With a rich history spanning over decades, this beloved attraction has transformed from humble beginnings into a thriving park that brings joy to millions of visitors each year.
Then: The Early Years
Knott Berry Farm's story began in the 1920s when Walter Knott and his wife Cordelia started a small berry farm. Selling berries and homemade preserves from the back of their truck, they struggled to make ends meet during the Great Depression.
However, their luck changed when Cordelia's famous fried chicken recipe attracted long lines of hungry customers. Realizing the potential of their business, the Knotts built a small restaurant called Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant. It quickly gained popularity, eventually leading to the opening of Ghost Town, a recreation of an old western town.

Knott's Berry Farm in the 1940s and 50s was an enormously important part of the Orange County landscape. Not only did most Southern California residents visit it on a regular basis, they made sure to take their out-of-town guests there also. Most out of state visitors to Southern California made Knott's the keystone of their visit. For young people growing up in a post-war environment, Ghost Town was an authentic look back into the lives of the pioneers who settled and worked this country. Hard work and self-reliance were the lessons taught here. When we're young, we naturally assume that places like Knott's will always be there. As we mature, we begin to realize that change is inevitable and that things aren't the way they used to be. Fortunately, historians like Jay Jennings have preserved this wonderful era, first with his book, "Knott's Berry Farm: The Early Years", and now with his second Knott's venture, "Knott's Berry Farm: Then & Now", featuring side-by-side, photographic comparisons between the Knott's of yesterday and today.
