Sometimes, a dock isn't just a dock... it's a habitat!
In the tiny fishing community of Panacea in Florida's Panhandle, the author's floating dock nurtures an abundance of marine life. Crabs, worms, mollusks and algae make their home there, feeding fish and other creatures higher up the food chain. These also feed author Jack Rudloe's business, Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, which supplies specimens to research and teaching institutions: marine fauna from his dock, from nearby mud flats and beaches, and netted offshore from his little shrimp boat Penaeus. Illustrated with drawings and watercolors of sea life by the late Walter Inglis Anderson, this entertaining and educational book examines the life histories of some of these colorful creatures and recounts Rudloe's adventures while collecting them.
Gulf Specimen Marine Lab is unique; this nonprofit research and educational facility provides marine specimens and environmental consulting services to public and private institutions worldwide. It also offers tours of its aquaria to school groups and the public, teaching visitors about hundreds of fascinating creatures.
Jack Rudloe's articles have appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest and many other magazines. He is the author of five other nonfiction books about marine creatures and naturalism, as well as a novel, Potluck, set in the Florida Panhandle. Throughout his career as author, naturalist, researcher, and environmental watchdog, he has focused attention and scientific inquiry on the impact of human activity on marine and estuarine habitats
