America Nightmare Unfolding In Afghanistan Chaos And Uncertainty Chaos In Kabul: America S Nightmare Unfolding In Afghanistan

For more than two decades, Afghanistan has been a source of nightmares for many nations involved in its conflict. From the Soviet Union's failed occupation in the 1980s to the ongoing war on terror led by the United States, the country has become a symbol of turmoil and instability.

However, in recent weeks, the situation in Afghanistan has taken a turn for the worse. The withdrawal of American forces and the rapid advance of the Taliban have left the Afghan government on the brink of collapse, plunging the country into chaos and uncertainty.

The Failed American Intervention

When the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001, their primary goal was to eliminate the Taliban and dismantle Al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization responsible for the 9/11 attacks. While they initially achieved some success, their efforts soon faltered.

The Taliban, a militant group known for their extreme interpretation of Islamic law, proved resilient and regrouped in neighboring Pakistan. As the conflict dragged on, it became clear that a quick victory was unattainable.

The American-led coalition faced numerous challenges, including corruption within the Afghan government, a lack of support from the local population, and a difficult terrain that favored the guerrilla tactics of the Taliban.

The Afghan Government's Inefficiency

Despite receiving billions of dollars in aid and support from the international community, the Afghan government has struggled to establish control over the country. Rampant corruption, weak institutions, and a lack of effective governance have undermined its legitimacy.

Furthermore, the government's inability to address the needs of its people, such as providing basic services and ensuring security, has fueled frustration and disillusionment among ordinary Afghans. This has ultimately eroded support for the government and empowered the Taliban.

The Taliban's Resurgence

In recent years, the Taliban has capitalized on the Afghan government's weaknesses to regain territory and influence. They have taken advantage of the American drawdown and exploited the vacuum left by the departing forces.

Their lightning-fast offensive in 2021 caught many by surprise. Within a matter of weeks, they captured key provincial capitals and encircled the capital city of Kabul, forcing the Afghan president to flee the country. It was a stunning display of military prowess that revealed the depth of the government's vulnerability.

Now, as the Taliban assert their authority, fears arise about the potential consequences for the Afghan people. The group's past record, characterized by strict interpretations of Islam and gross abuses of human rights, raises concerns about the future of the country and its citizens.

Afghanistan's Uncertain Future

As the nightmare unfolds in Afghanistan, the international community watches with unease. The abrupt collapse of the Afghan government raises questions about the effectiveness of the American intervention and the true state of democracy in the country.

The return of the Taliban to power also poses a threat to regional stability. The group's links to other extremist organizations, such as ISIS, could facilitate the resurgence of global terrorism.

Additionally, the plight of Afghan civilians cannot be overlooked. The country is facing a humanitarian crisis, with thousands attempting to flee the Taliban's rule. Women, in particular, fear a return to the oppressive regime imposed by the group when they were last in power.

The International Response

Many nations have condemned the Taliban's actions and expressed concern for the Afghan people. Humanitarian aid has been pledged, and efforts are being made to evacuate vulnerable individuals, especially those who have worked with foreign forces.

However, the situation remains complex and uncertain. The speed at which events have unfolded has caught many by surprise, and it will take concerted efforts and international cooperation to address the multifaceted challenges facing Afghanistan.

America's nightmare in Afghanistan continues to unfold with the rapid advance of the Taliban and the unraveling of the Afghan government. The implications of this crisis reach far beyond the country's borders, threatening regional stability and global security.

As the international community grapples with the consequences, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Afghan people. While the road ahead is uncertain, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that Afghanistan does not become a breeding ground for extremism and violence.

Only time will tell what lies in store for Afghanistan, but one thing is for certain – the nightmares that haunt this war-torn nation are far from over.

"The likelihood there's going to be a Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely." -- President Joseph Biden, July 2021.

After two decades and over a trillion dollars, the endgame for Americans and its allies regarding Afghanistan is simply this: On August 15, 2021, the country fell to an insurgent group, the Taliban, with a force strength of 80,000 men. Backed by the U.S., an Afghan military of 325,000 failed to defend its country, despite being trained by the U.S., supplied with weapons and vehicles, and provided on-call air assets for close air support. Faced with a motivated fighting force, the Afghan army surrendered en masse, fled, or took off their uniforms to don civilian garb and disappear in the crowds. On August 15, 2021, their leader, President Ashraf Ghani, exhorted his military to fight, and the next day he took flight on a helicopter with his wife and two top aides; he also (according to the Russians) stole a small fortune in U.S. currency after he raided the country's piggy bank, according to the Russians.

Chaos erupted as terrified Afghans rushed to the airport, where U.S. troops allowed those with special bracelets (contractors, foreign nationals, civilian personnel, and embassy staff) to board and fly to safety, on C-17 cargo planes. An estimated 20,000 Afghans who aided the U.S. in the war effort against the Taliban were left to their own devices; some got out, including one plane full of 650 Afghan nationals, but most are now trapped in a Taliban-controlled country, with no good options: They likely face beheading or being shot.

Looking at what went so disastrously wrong during the evacuation, which was not planned because the U.S. intelligence community determined that a Taliban take-over of the country might occur in 18 months, there was no viable contingency plan because it was not deemed necessary. Without a plan, the U.S. planned to fail, and did so spectacularly: rushing thousands of troops in by air to assist in an evacuation, the Kabul airport was overrun by thousands of fleeing Afghans, some of whom clung onto a moving C-17 cargo jet as it took to the air, dropping off like flies as the jet ascended: seven young men fell, hitting residential homes near the airport. Despite U.S. administration assertions that the rout of Afghanistan and the chaos during the evacuation was in no way equivalent to what happened when Saigon fell, the news media worldwide disagreed: American foreign policy in Afghanistan was a monumental and unmitigated failure on a grand scale, and a warning to the world that wonders just how committed the U.S. will be as an ally for future alliances.

A massive failure of foreign policy, a public relations disaster, and a stain--a damned spot that won't come out--on both the Trump and Biden administrations, the endgame in Afghanistan was not what Americans had hoped for, but it was everything the Taliban hoped for, because they won the endgame: the country fell without a fight, and terrorists now have a safe haven, once again, in Afghanistan where they will with impunity plan future missions against the U.S., potentially drawing "The Great Satan" back into a country that, quite properly, is termed "The Graveyard of Empires," as the British and the Russians discovered, to their regret.
