The Art of Amigurumi and the Adorable World of Ugly Animals

Create Your Own Ugly Animal: The Whale Crochet Pattern
One of the most beloved ugly animals in the amigurumi world is the whale. With its large body, small eyes, and adorable tail, the crochet whale is a go-to project for both beginners and experienced crafters.
To help you kickstart your amigurumi journey, we've created a step-by-step tutorial on how to crochet your very own ugly animal - the whale. Follow along with our crochet pattern below:
Materials You Will Need:
- Yarn: Choose your favorite color for the body and accent color for the tail.
- Crochet hook: Appropriate size for your yarn thickness.
- Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill or your preferred stuffing material.
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Crochet Pattern:
Round 1: Start with a magic circle and make 6 single crochet (sc) stitches into the circle. (6 stitches) Round 2: Increase by making 2 sc into each stitch. (12 stitches) Round 3: *Sc in the next stitch, then increase by making 2 sc in the following stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches) Round 4: *Sc in the next 2 stitches, then increase by making 2 sc in the following stitch*. Repeat from * to * around. (24 stitches) Round 5-9: Sc in each stitch. (24 stitches) Round 10: *Sc in the next 2 stitches, then decrease by making 1 sc over the next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to * around. (18 stitches) Round 11: Sc in each stitch. (18 stitches) Round 12: *Sc in the next stitch, then decrease by making 1 sc over the next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to * around. (12 stitches) Round 13: Sc in each stitch. (12 stitches) Round 14: Decrease by making 1 sc over the next 2 stitches until the opening is small enough to close. (6 stitches)
Once you've completed the crochet pattern, sew the opening closed, leaving a small hole to stuff the whale. Fill the body with stuffing, ensuring it is firm but not overfilled. Lastly, sew the remaining hole closed and weave in any loose ends.
Feel free to add your personal touch by embroidering eyes, adding fins, or even attaching a little top hat to give your whale its own unique personality. The beauty of amigurumi lies in the freedom to experiment and let your creativity shine.
The world of amigurumi offers endless possibilities, and the trend of creating ugly animals has added another dimension to this captivating craft. With their unconventional appearances and undeniable charm, these adorable creatures have become a beloved addition to many amigurumi collections.
The whale crochet pattern provided above is just one example of the many unique creations you can make. So grab your crochet hook, choose your favorite yarn, and dive into the world of amigurumi with these irresistibly charming ugly animals.
