In this article, we delve deep into the history books to uncover the untold stories that have long captivated historians and enthusiasts alike.

Davy Crockett was a larger-than-life figure, whose exploits and adventures have become legendary. Born in Tennessee, Crockett served as a congressman before venturing to Texas to join the fight for independence from Mexico. He arrived at the Alamo in February 1836, where he chose to make his valiant last stand.

According to popular accounts, Crockett fought bravely until the very end, along with his fellow defenders. The details of his death, however, have always been shrouded in mystery. Some claim that he fought until he was overrun by Mexican troops, while others believe he may have been executed after surrendering. The truth may never be known, but the legend of Crockett's last stand endures.

One of the biggest mysteries of the Texas Revolution is the fate of the "Goliad Massacre." After the Battle of Coleto, around 400 Texan prisoners of war were executed on orders from Mexican General Santa Anna. This atrocity galvanized the Texan forces and fueled their determination to seek revenge. The exact details of the massacre remain unclear, and many questions persist about the events leading up to it.

Another fascinating mystery is the identity of the famous "Yellow Rose of Texas." This woman became an influential figure in Texan history, using her charm and beauty to gather crucial intelligence for the Texan forces. Despite her importance, the true identity of the Yellow Rose has remained a subject of debate. Various theories suggest different women who could have been the mysterious figure, but conclusive evidence is yet to be found.

One lesser-known mystery surrounds the so-called "Black Bean Incident." Following the surrender of Texan forces at the Battle of Salado Creek, Mexican General Adrian Woll ordered that 17 lucky black beans and the rest marked with white were placed in a pot. Each prisoner drew a bean, and those who drew black were summarily executed. The randomness of the selection process has long intrigued historians, leaving them to wonder about the potential repercussions on the battle's outcome.

The Texas Revolution, with all its mysteries and enigmas, continues to captivate scholars, history buffs, and tourists alike. As more research and discoveries are made, new layers of understanding are added to this fascinating chapter in American history.

In Sleuthing the Alamo, historian James E. Crisp draws back the curtain on years of mythmaking to reveal some surprising truths about the Texas Revolution--truths often obscured by both racism and "political correctness," as history has been hijacked by combatants in the culture wars of the past two centuries.
Beginning with a very personal prologue recalling both the pride and the prejudices that he encountered in the Texas of his youth, Crisp traces his path to the discovery of documents distorted, censored, and ignored--documents which reveal long-silenced voices from the Texan past. In each of four chapters focusing on specific documentary "finds," Crisp uncovers the clues that led to these archival discoveries. Along the way, the cast of characters expands to include: a prominent historian who tried to walk away from his first book; an unlikely teenaged "speechwriter" for General Sam Houston; three eyewitnesses to the death of Davy Crockett at the Alamo; a desperate inmate of Mexico City's Inquisition Prison, whose scribbled memoir of the war in Texas is now listed in the
Guiness Book of World Records; and the stealthy slasher of the most famous historical painting in Texas. In his afterword, Crisp explores the evidence behind the mythic "Yellow Rose of Texas" and examines some of the powerful forces at work in silencing the very voices from the past that we most need to hear today.
Here then is an engaging first-person account of historical detective work, illuminating the methods of the serious historian--and the motives of those who prefer glorious myth to unflattering truth.
