In the scenic park region of western Minnesota a landmark old flour mill has been a draw and destination since the 1880s. Phelps Mill was built on the banks of the Otter Tail River and operated as a mill in the era when “wheat was king.” Local farmers planted their grain in fields they cleared of forests and plowed to produce crops that fed the growing American nation with flour for the bread that was needed by all.

The first part of the book creates a picture of the people who established Phelps Mill as a business community. It looks at the shops and services which sprung up alongside the flour mill. Crossroads communities like Phelps Mill were vital in serving rural populations. A general store, blacksmith shop, repair shop, restaurant and cheese factory, and their proprietors, along with Phelps Mill and its owner William E. Thomas, are covered in this main section.
