Welcome to Sochi! I was born in this beautiful city and lived here for 23 years. Although I now reside in Santa Monica, CA, I visit my hometown almost every year.
During Soviet times Sochi was one of the most popular resorts in the USSR; it annually hosted several million tourists from all over the country as well as overseas. Today it is the southernmost Russian resort on the Black Sea coast, with hundreds of great attractions.
To my surprise, the well-known book 1000 Places to See Before You Die, lists no sites in Sochi. In my eyes this is a pity, because there are plenty of things to see and do in this resort city. Throughout this book you will find more than 100 places to visit in Sochi, with some attractions described in detail and some described in less depth. Overall, you will develop an idea of the variety of activities that Sochi offers. I also included a list of my 25 most favored adventures.
This book will introduce you to dolmens, contemporaries of Egyptian pyramids, sub-tropical fruit and main species of palm trees that grow in Sochi. You will also learn about ancient Circassian legends and Greek myths about the land, and about brave Decembrists who lost their lives here. You will discover what a sanatorium or palace of health is, and learn about unusual forms of therapies that are common in Sochi. This city is very unique, and its Caucasus National Biosphere reserve was included on UNESCO’s World Natural Heritage list in 1999.
Back in 1994, as a student of the Sochi State University, I wrote a paper on the subject of hosting the Olympic Games in Sochi. 20 years later, my dream has become a reality. In February 2014 my city will meet the ambassadors of peace from all over the world and host the XXII Winter Olympic Games.
