Solo Unsupported Cycle Of Route 66 Travels With Surly: Pedalling The Mother Road: Solo Unsupported Cycle Of Route 66

Embarking on a solo unsupported cycle journey is not for the faint-hearted. It requires guts, determination, and a thirst for adventure. And when the route in question is none other than the iconic Route 66, the experience becomes even more awe-inspiring.

What is Route 66?

Route 66, often referred to as the "Mother Road," is a historic highway in the United States, stretching from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. It holds a special place in American popular culture, symbolizing the freedom and possibilities of the open road.

The Challenge of a Solo Unsupported Cycle

Undertaking a solo unsupported cycle involves cycling a long distance armed with only your bike, necessary supplies, and determination. Unlike supported expeditions where teams provide assistance and logistics, a solo unsupported cycle puts you in complete charge of your journey. This freedom to explore and overcome challenges on your own is what makes it so enticing.

Route 66 conjures up images of freedom, the open road and the opening up of the West. It served as the backdrop for John Steinbeck's major work, The Grapes of Wrath in which the Joad family, forced to leave their land in the Dust Bowl, made their way to California. This 2,400-mile route, almost killed off by the Interstates, continues to survive through the work of local historical groups, dedicated enthusiasts and through the support of those in search of adventure. This is the story of my unsupported cycle, over thirty-seven days in the summer of 2016, from Chicago to Santa Monica.
