Welcome to the mesmerizing world of Aeschylus, the revered ancient Greek playwright often referred to as the father of tragedy. His plays, which were performed in Athens during the 5th century BCE, have left a profound impact on the world of theater, influencing generations of artists and writers throughout history.

Aeschylus' plays offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of the Classical World, transporting audiences to a time of gods and heroes, where divine intervention clashed with mortal endeavors, and fate played a central role in shaping the narratives.

Exploring the Themes

Aeschylus Plays Themes The Plays Of Aeschylus (Classical World)Aeschylean tragedies were renowned for their exploration of timeless themes. One of the recurring motifs in his plays is the inevitable clash between fate and free will. Aeschylus believed that humans were at the mercy of the gods, and their actions, no matter how noble or despicable, were ultimately guided by a preordained destiny.

Another key theme found in Aeschylus' plays is the concept of justice. His characters often struggle with moral dilemmas, seeking to find a balance between vengeance and mercy. Aeschylus believed that justice originated from divine law and that the consequences of one's actions would ultimately be determined by the gods.

The exploration of the power of words is also a prominent aspect of Aeschylean dramas. His plays showcased the persuasive skills of characters and the potential havoc that could be wreaked through manipulation and deception. These narratives prompt the audience to reflect on the consequences of their own words and the responsibility that comes with wielding the power of language.

Iconic Plays

Aeschylus wrote numerous plays during his career, but only a handful have survived to the present day. Among his most iconic works is the Oresteia, a trilogy comprised of Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. This grand trilogy explores the aftermath of the Trojan War, delving into the House of Atreus and the ill-fated destiny of its members.

An equally powerful play is Prometheus Bound, which focuses on the titan Prometheus and his punishment for defying Zeus. This tragic tale explores themes of rebellion, suffering, and the enduring nature of the human spirit.

Throughout history, Aeschylus' works have continued to captivate audiences and inspire countless adaptations. From the Renaissance to the modern-day, his plays have been reimagined in various forms, including opera, film, and literature.

Interpreting Aeschylus' Plays

This excellent to the six extant plays of Aeschylus is fully revised and updated, with additional further reading, ideal for the student unfamiliar with these earliest of Greek tragedies. Aeschylus is the oldest of the three great Greek tragedians and lived from 525/524 to 465/455. He took part in the battle of Marathon in 490 and probably also in the battle of Salamis in 480, the subject of his Persians.

Working in chronological order of their first production, this volume explores Persians, the earliest Greek tragedy that has come down to us; Seven against Thebes; Suppliants; and the three plays of the Oresteia trilogy: Agamemnon, Libation Bearers and Eumenides. The book also contains an essay on Prometheus Bound, now generally thought not to be by Aeschylus, but accepted as his in antiquity.

The volume is a companion to The Plays of Euripides (by James Morwood) and The Plays of Sophocles (by Alex Garvie) also available in second editions from Bloomsbury. A further essential guide to the themes and context of ancient Greek tragedy may be found in Laura Swift's new introductory volume, Greek Tragedy.
