The History of the United Arab Emirates - The Greenwood Histories of the Modern
The United Arab Emirates, known as the UAE, is a young nation that has rapidly transformed into a global powerhouse. Situated in the Arabian Peninsula, this federation of seven emirates has a rich history that dates back centuries.
The Formation of the United Arab Emirates
The history of the UAE can be traced back to the mid-18th century when the areas now forming the emirates were under tribal rule. These tribes engaged in trade, fishing, and pearl diving, forming a basis for the region's economy.
However, it was not until the 19th century that the region gained recognition as a unified entity. The British Empire played a significant role in the formation of the modern UAE, as it signed several treaties with individual emirates to ensure maritime security and protect trade routes.

Under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first President of the UAE, the nation embarked on a journey of progress and development. The United Arab Emirates is a relatively young country in the Middle East, made up of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain. How did these seven separate emirates come together to form the United Arab Emirates?
This volume explores the long, rich history of these seven emirates, focusing on political history but also highlighting culture, society, economy, and religion. Chronologically arranged chapters examine major eras and turning points in history, such as antiquity, the rise of Islam, British trade, and the discovery of black gold: oil.
Readers will learn how today, most of the UAE's citizens are foreigners from other countries, as well as how much of the country's economy and livelihood depend on oil. An appendix of Notable People in the History of the United Arab Emirates serves to identify key players in the region's history, and an annotated bibliographic essay provides readers with sources for further research. Ideal for students, this volume is an important addition to the Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations series.
