Children typically start their educational journey at the age of three, attending preschool to develop social skills and basic knowledge before moving on to primary school. The foundations laid during these early years play a fundamental role in shaping their future academic endeavors.
Primary schools in Vietnam provide students with a comprehensive education, covering subjects such as math, literature, science, and foreign languages. Discipline and hard work are instilled through strict rules and regulations, fostering a culture of diligence and perseverance.
2. Classroom Dynamics and Extracurricular Activities
Classroom dynamics in Vietnam are often marked by a strong teacher-student relationship. Teachers are respected figures who are seen as mentors and guides. They play a pivotal role in nurturing students' curiosity, helping them navigate challenges, and fostering a love for learning.
Moreover, extracurricular activities in Vietnam's schools provide students with opportunities to develop their talents and interests outside the classroom. Cultural performances, sports competitions, and art exhibitions are just a few examples of the vibrant extracurricular scene that forms an integral part of school life.
3. Challenges and Stories of Resilience
Despite the immense value placed on education in Vietnam, the system has faced its fair share of challenges throughout history. One such challenge was the aftermath of the Vietnam War, which left the country devastated but determined to rebuild.
Resources were limited, and classrooms were often overcrowded, making it difficult for students to receive individual attention. Yet, the resilience of both students and teachers prevailed. Teachers found innovative ways to engage their students, while students learned to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity.
Countless stories exist of students walking long distances to attend school, sometimes braving treacherous weather conditions and challenging terrains. These tales of determination and perseverance serve as a testament to the unwavering commitment to education in Vietnam.
4. Innovations and Modernization
In recent years, Vietnam has made significant strides in modernizing its education system. Innovations in teaching methods, incorporation of technology, and increased access to quality resources have transformed the learning experience for many students.
Government initiatives have focused on improving the quality of educators, expanding access to education in rural areas, and promoting scientific research and innovation. These advancements aim to equip the new generation of students with the skills necessary for success in an ever-evolving global landscape.
5. Cherished Memories and Lifelong Friendships

School Days in Vietnam is the third book in a trilogy that encompass five years of teaching English in Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam. I only taught for a year in Hanoi and used the second year to travel and carry-on with other missions in my life that included writing much of this book and other stories about travel. I had wanted to live in Hanoi since first visiting in 2004, but the opportunity didnt present itself until eight years later through employment as an English teacher in an international school. In my mind I had high expectations and a goal of remaining in Hanoi for two years. Everything was more interesting and meaningful than I could have expected and at the end of two years I felt tied to my friendships and the amazing lifestyle that was simple yet lavish in humanity. I was totally enamored with Vietnam, the people, the natural beauty of its diverse geography, and the culture that separates it from all other nations. I made more friends than I had in any other country, and in North Vietnam I enjoyed a weather pattern that was near to the tropics but decidedly four seasons.
