When it comes to studying contemporary philosophy, there are several influential thinkers whose works have reshaped our understanding of ethics, morality, and existentialism. In this article, we will delve into the realm of philosophical thought by exploring the writings of Jurgen Frankfurt, Alasdair Macintyre, and Soren Kierkegaard through the lens of Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy.

Frankfurt's Illuminating Insights on Moral Philosophy

Jurgen Frankfurt is renowned for his groundbreaking work on moral philosophy and the concept of free will. In his seminal book, "Freedom of the Will and the Concept of a Person," Frankfurt challenges traditional notions of freedom and argues that moral responsibility lies in one's second-order desires, rather than in external factors or pure chance.

With an emphasis on self-reflection and the examination of one's motives, Frankfurt's ideas have had a profound impact on contemporary debates surrounding morality and determinism. Through Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy, readers can explore Frankfurt's thought-provoking perspectives on ethical decision-making.

Macintyre's Critique of Modern Moral Philosophy

Another influential philosopher featured in Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy is Alasdair Macintyre. Macintyre's groundbreaking book, "After Virtue," sets forth a scathing critique of modern moral philosophy and argues for a return to virtue ethics.

In "After Virtue," Macintyre highlights the fragmentation and relativism present in contemporary approaches to ethics, advocating for the revival of Aristotelian virtues and the importance of tradition. His work has sparked intense debates among philosophers and has reinvigorated the study of virtue ethics in the context of contemporary society.

Kierkegaard's Existential Exploration of Faith

One cannot talk about contemporary philosophy without mentioning Soren Kierkegaard. Through his existentialist writings, Kierkegaard delves deep into the realm of faith, despair, and the quest for meaning in a seemingly absurd world.

Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy showcases Kierkegaard's influential works, such as "Fear and Trembling" and "The Sickness Unto Death," which explore the complexities of faith, the individual's relationship with God, and the importance of subjective truth.

In the last two decades, interest in narrative conceptions of identity has grown exponentially, though there is little agreement about what a "life-narrative" might be. In connecting Kierkegaard with virtue ethics, several scholars have recently argued that narrative models of selves and MacIntyre's concept of the unity of a life help make sense of Kierkegaard's existential stages and, in particular, explain the transition from "aesthetic" to "ethical" modes of life. But others have recently raised difficult questions both for these readings of Kierkegaard and for narrative accounts of identity that draw on the work of MacIntyre in general. While some of these objections concern a strong kind of unity or "wholeheartedness" among an agent's long-term goals or cares, the fundamental objection raised by critics is that personal identity cannot be a narrative, since stories are artifacts made by persons. In this book, Davenport defends the narrative approach to practical identity and autonomy in general, and to Kierkegaard's stages in particular.
