My True Story Of Life And Death In The Troubles: A Journey Through Turmoil and Triumph
The Troubles. The name itself sends shivers down the spine of those who lived through it. A tumultuous period in Northern Ireland's history that lasted for over three decades, the Troubles left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals. This is my own personal account, a story of not just survival, but resilience, hope, and the will to never give up.
It was the late 1960s when the first whispers of discontent began to echo through the streets of Belfast. Communities that once lived in relative harmony were now divided along religious and political lines. I was just a young boy, completely oblivious to the storm brewing around me.
As tensions escalated and violence erupted on the streets, it became impossible to ignore the Troubles any longer. Bombs and bullets became part of our daily lives, our existence caught in a relentless cycle of fear and uncertainty. I witnessed friends and family members torn apart by the senseless violence, their lives taken far too soon.

The constant threat of death loomed over us like a dark cloud, but amidst the chaos, moments of humanity shone through. Neighbors helping neighbors, friends providing support when it was needed most – these acts of kindness became beacons of hope in an otherwise bleak reality.
One fateful day, as a young man in my early twenties, I found myself in the wrong place at the wrong time. A bomb exploded just meters away from me, engulfing the street in an inferno of destruction. The images of that day are forever etched in my mind – the screams, the blood, the rubble. Miraculously, I survived, but the physical and emotional scars would remain with me for a lifetime.
Following the attack, I made a vow to myself – I would not let fear dictate my life. This was my defining moment, the catalyst that propelled me forward in search of a better future. I became involved in grassroots community initiatives, working tirelessly to bring people from all backgrounds together in a bid for peace.
The journey was not easy, and the road to reconciliation was long and arduous. We faced opposition, skepticism, and moments of despair. But inch by inch, day by day, progress was made. The power of forgiveness and understanding slowly replaced the bitterness that had consumed us for far too long.
Through the years, I saw the Troubles transform from a raging storm into a distant memory. The communities that were once divided began to heal, bridging the gaps that had torn us apart for so long. I witnessed schools being built, businesses thriving, and a sense of unity that I never thought possible.
The Troubles taught me many things, but above all, it taught me the preciousness of life. Every moment became an opportunity to embrace joy, to appreciate the beauty of simply being alive. I found solace in art, in storytelling, and in helping others find their voice in the midst of adversity.
Today, as I reflect on my journey through the Troubles, I am grateful. Grateful for the strength that carried me through the darkest of times. Grateful for the love and support of those who never wavered in their belief in a better future. But most importantly, I am grateful for the chance to share my story and inspire others to never lose hope.
The Troubles may be a chapter in history, but the scars it left behind are still healing. My hope is that through understanding, empathy, and a commitment to peace, we can ensure that no one else has to go through what we endured. We must learn from the past to shape a brighter future for generations to come.
This is my true story of life and death in the Troubles, a story of resilience, forgiveness, and ultimately, triumph. Join me in spreading the message of hope – together, we can make a difference in this world.

John Chambers was brought up on Belfast's notorious Loyalist Glencairn estate, during the height of the Troubles. From an early age he witnessed violence, hatred and horror as Northern Ireland tore itself apart in civil strife. Kneecapping, brutal murders, and even public tarring-and-feathering were simply a fact of life for the children on the estate. He thought he knew which side he was on, but although raised as a Loyalist, he was hiding a troubling secret: that his disappeared mother - whom he'd always been told was dead - was a Roman Catholic, 'the enemy'.
In a memoir of rare power, John explores the dark heart of Northern Irish sectarianism in the seventies and eighties. With searing honesty and native Belfast wit, he describes the light and darkness of his unique childhood, and his teenage journey through mod culture and ultra-Loyalism, before an escape from Belfast to London - where, still haunted by the shadow of his fractured family history - he began a turbulent and hedonistic adulthood.
A Belfast Child is a tale of divided loyalties, dark secrets and the scars left by hatred and violence on a proud city - but also a story of hope, healing and ultimate redemption for a family caught in the rising tide of the Troubles.
